What’s not cool? What happens when you don’t officially clear a sample, even on Tik-Tok.

Jaybird client Deborah Mannis-Gardner explained in the Rolling Stone article She Sampled His Hit on TikTok. Then All Hell Broke Loose:

Kids need to understand that even though you’re giving something away for free, sharing it on TikTok because you’re really excited about something you created, you still need to get permission [to use a sample] because you don’t own that song 100 percent,”

Deborah Mannis-Gardner, one of the music industry’s most outspoken advocates of proper sample usage, and the founder of DMG Clearances.

Deborah has also been busy working as the music supervisor of the feature film Spinning Gold, a biopic of Casablanca records founder and leader Neil Bogart that was written and directed by his son, Timothy Scott Bogart. It is Mannis-Gardner’s second Music Supervisor credit, following her work on HBO’s Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine docu-series The Defiant Ones, for which she won the Best Music Supervision in a Docu-Series or Reality Television award from the Guild of Music Supervisors.

“It’s been a joy working with Tim and Evan Bogart, the producers on Spinning Gold, a real labor of love all around,” said Mannis-Gardner. “It’s crucial for the music to live up to Neil’s legacy and that of his artists, and I’m honored they trusted me to help them secure the songs for the right performers at the right moments. Major thanks to [music producer] Evan and [Atlantic Records President] Kevin Weaver for bringing the recordings to life, and to the cast for knocking their performances out of the park.”

Congratulations are in order! Billboard named three MIME executives to their Indie Powers Players and Pride Lists. David Porter (CEO, MIME), Tony D. Alexander (President & Managing Director, MIME), and Jessica Vaughn (VP, Sync & Creative, Heavy Hitters Music) — have been named to the latest prestigious Billboard Power lists. Porter and Alexander were both named to the Indie Power Players list, while Vaughn was recognized on the Billboard Pride list.

Hits Daily Double caught up with the legendary songwriter/producer and MIME (Made in Memphis Entertainment) co-founder David Porter to discuss his legendary career, the success of MIME and the amazing activity happening in the studios. In discussing their success, Porter said, ”I have six platinum awards in my office right now and a Moneybagg Yo plaque just came in.” Read more about Mr. Porter, his storied work with Stax Records, and his “vision of a Black music distribution hub come to life” in DAVID PORTER GROOVES ON

MusicTechWorks’ rightsholder.io introduced its bulk song data research service, ideal for companies that need larger quantities of song ownership information – as few as ten titles or into the millions – for licensing, registration research, catalog insights, and any application that requires data about music copyrights at scale. Trialed with companies in the music clearances, catalog acquisition, and UGC app sectors, Rightsholder saved these commercial clients countless hours of human research work, allowing them to focus on their core business strengths rather than cross-referencing databases.
