Liz Garner – who served as copyright administrator to the Estate of Isaac Hayes in its lawsuit against Donald John Trump and Donald J. Trump for President 2024, Inc. regarding their use of the song “Hold On, I’m Comin’” – has issued the below statement in response to the suit’s mutual resolution.

“The outcome of this lawsuit highlights the importance of copyright law, and particularly the need for artists to officially reserve their rights when they release music. Contrary to popular belief, copyright coverage is not automatic, and if you don’t take the time to file correctly with the U.S. Copyright Office, you won’t be able to take the kinds of steps that Isaac Hayes’ family and estate did in this case. I do what I do to help musicians profit from their creativity and create generational wealth for their families, and this simple rule is the foundation of everything.”
